The Place For Everything Movies
Trying to choose who will make it big in a given year is not an easy task, but it is always interesting and fun. Last year I took at stab at with this with my post, “Who will be the talk of the town in 2012?” , and I was pretty damn accurate. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Josh Hutcherson, and Martin Freeman all got considerable fame boosts while Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Juno Temple missed out on mainstream fame, but both got even more indie cred.
Since I had some luck with this last year I thought I might give it another go. 2013 has some films with a lot of star power, but as always there are surprises and the little guys come out on top. We saw this last year as Johnny Depp’s Dark Shadows tanked while The Hunger Games, starring the little known Jennifer Lawrence, became one of the highest grossing movies of the year. Surprises are always nice, and I hope we get plenty more this year.
Without further ado, let’s countdown the Potential Breakout Stars of 2013:
You were in Immortals? Never saw it. Oh, you were in Red Riding Hood? Let’s try and forget that one. Henry Cavill has starred in some stinkers over the years but it looks like things are turning around for him with Man of Steel where he will take on the iconic role of Clark Kent. If starring as Superman does not make Cavill into a star, then I don’t know what will. Zack Snyder as a director may have to prove himself after Sucker Punch, but we know the man has some talent and casting Cavill as Superman is a nice choice.
The first trailer for the film looks very promising:
Man of Steel hits theaters June 14th, and costars Amy Adams and Russell Crowe.
Miss Jane Levy has been stuck in Suborgatory, but it may be time to move on. This year she will star in the grisly remake of Sam Raimi’s cult classic, Evil Dead. I may not be thrilled with the idea of this film being remade, however it is sure to give a major star boost to this young lady. Many A-listers, such as Jennifer Aniston and Keira Knightley, began their ascent to fame with horror, and it seems Levy could join the ranks.
The trailer does not lack in the gore department:
Evil Dead hit theaters April 5th, and costars Shiloh Fernandez and Jessica Lucas.
A Real World star making it big? Who’da thunk it? Jamie Chung stared on the MTv reality back in the early 2000s, but in the past few years she has starred in blockbusters such as Grown Ups and The Hangover Part II, and she also scored a reoccurring role on the hit show, Once Upon A Time. All of films have placed her in small supporting roles, but this year may be her big break! The actress will star in the horror/thriller 7500, Sin City: A Dame to Kill, and she will also reprise her role as Lauren in The Hangover Part III. With all these films combined, a breakout is definitely in her grasp.
Sin City hit theaters October 4th, Hangover will roll in on May 24th, and 7500 will premiere later this year.
The king of forgotten roles! Oscar Isaac has starred in Drive, Body of Lies, and Robin Hood yet he is never headlined and his roles always seem to be forgotten about in the shuffle. 2013 could break the curse for Isaac! This year he will headline the new Cohen Brothers movie, Inside Llewyn Davis, as well as star in the thriller, The Two Faces of January, with Kirsten Dunst and Viggo Mortensen. Both films have the potential to get this great actor the attention that has alluded him for so long.
Inside Llewyn Davis and The Two Faces of January have undetermined US release dates.
Can an Oscar nominee be a breakout star? I sure think so! Carey Mulligan has built up a formidable filmography over the years with films such as Drive, An Education, and Pride & Prejudice, yet she is far from being a household name. Most people know her as that cute girl who dated Shia LaBeouf, but this year will most definitely be different. Miss Mulligan will take on the infamous role of Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann’s much anticipated adaptation of The Great Gatsby. As if that were not enough, she will also costar in Inside Llewyn Davis with Oscar Isaac. This rising star sure knows how to pick her roles!
Just gaze at the amazement:
The Great Gatsby hit theaters May 10th, and costars Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire.
Little side-note: If Gatsby is half as good as the trailer then I can die happy!
Well there you have it! It is still much too early to tell if my predictions will ring true, but we have plenty of great movies to look forward to in the meantime. Well get to the theater and see something unforgettable! If you see a great movie send me a tweet @KevinJCarroll1 , I would love to hear about it. Happy moviegoing!
